A Friday evening road trip by three students from South Eastern Kenya University (Seku) in Kitui ended in tragedy when they were killed road accident.

The students, who were riding a motorcycle on their 47-kilometre journey from Seku's main campus to Kitui town, rammed into a stationary truck on their return trip.

They all died on the spot as they returned from their evening outing.

The accident happened around 8pm near Kwa Vonza market along the Kitui - Machakos highway.

Two of the three students were cousins from Kisii County, with the third student being the rider of the trio.

According to the area chief of Kwa Vonza location, Ronald Mbuvi, the three were riding on a motorcycle to their residence in Kwa Vonza when they crashed into the back of a sand truck that had been parked by the B due to mechanical failures.

Mr Abuga, a family relative told Nation.Africa that the stationary lorry ferrying sand did not have any reflectors to warn other road users, as required by law.

Mr Abuga regretted the needless loss of lives and appealed for help from both the University and the government in transporting their bodies for burial.

Meanwhile, the bodies of the deceased have been taken by the officers to the Kitui County Referral Hospital mortuary as police investigations continue.
