Corruption should attract death penalty

Bribes

Anti-corruption organisations have come and gone in Kenya with little impact on graft.

Misgivings • As the Catholic Church and the whole world celebrate the election of the new Pope, Nyambati Mogire is already having some misgivings. Says he: “Immediately Pope Leo XIV took charge at the Vatican, he called for lasting peace in Gaza and Ukraine. Why not in the DR Congo, Sudan and South Sudan, which have nearly 230 million Catholics?” His contact is [email protected].

Divisions • Politicians should stop antagonising fellow Kenyans, says Jimmy Thumbi, calling out former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua for his “unfortunate pronouncements on violence”. He adds: “Politicians will forever wage their own fights. The divisive things President William Ruto had vowed would never happen again are what we are witnessing now.” His contact is [email protected].

Death for graft • In China and Indonesia, David Githae notes, “corruption is punishable by death”. But in Kenya, he adds, chicken thieves, pickpockets, violent robbers, wife-beaters, reckless drivers and others convicted of minor offences fill the jails. “The corrupt easily buy their freedom, leaving jail for the poor. I wish corruption could result attract the death penalty.” His contact is [email protected].

Sanity • Nairobi can only be made great again if the construction and expansion of residential and commercial housing is halted until sewerage is improved and the perennial water shortages sorted out, says Joe Ngige Mungai. “The city county must crack down on hawkers and boda boda and eject matatu touts from the central business district to restore sanity.” His contact is [email protected].

Overshadowed • US President Donald Trump, Githuku Mungai notes, has just visited Qatar, confirming its global strategic importance. “With a population of just about two million, Qatar’s land area is roughly equivalent to that of Baringo County, while its GDP is more than double Kenya’s. We’re not idle; we are doing what we can to continue building our country.” His contact is [email protected].
