Uber-like app to ease, quicken access to legal services

Dar es Salaam. Lawyers in Dar es Salaam have unveiled a new mobile application designed to connect individuals seeking legal services with nearby lawyers of their choice.

Dubbed WakiliApp—referred to by its creators as the “Uber of lawyers”—the platform aims to revolutionise access to justice by allowing users to easily identify, contact, and engage available legal professionals based on their needs and location.

“Basically, our app will make access to justice a reality for the majority of Tanzanians. We believe it will significantly improve the speed and ease of obtaining legal services across the country,” said one of the lead developers, advocate Paul Kaunda.

Mr Kaunda explained that all legal practitioners operating through the app will undergo a strict vetting process to ensure their legitimacy and ethical standing, thereby building trust and confidence among users.

“This programme is trustworthy and legitimate. We are fully compliant with the law,” he affirmed.

The legal-tech start-up has already been registered and licensed by the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA).

WakiliApp is also expected to generate new employment opportunities for young lawyers, many of whom have long struggled to find clients.

“The legal profession has faced challenges from unqualified practitioners. This app will help address that issue by promoting professionalism. It will enhance visibility for young lawyers and curb undercutting,” Mr Kaunda added.

The app offers a wide portfolio of legal services, with fees benchmarked against the Advocates Remuneration Order of 2025. Operating under a gig economy model, WakiliApp acts as a neutral tech intermediary linking clients with licensed advocates.

Among the services available via the app are legal consultations, certification of documents, attestation of mortgage agreements, preparation of affidavits, legal opinions, and constitutions. It also facilitates the drafting of sale contracts for movable and immovable property, lease agreements, and company formation.
