Umoja Sharks top at Kiambu County Aquatics Association swimming championship

Umoja Sharks Swimming Club on Sunday emerged overall winners of the Kiambu County Aquatics Association (KCAA) Invitational Swimming Championship held at Regis Academy, Runda on May 10-11.

The championship, which attracted 240 swimmers from 19 schools and clubs, saw Umoja collect 73 medals (34 gold, 25 silver, and 14 bronze).

Orca Swim Club came second with 33 gold, 30 silver, and 13 bronze medals, while Aga Khan Academy finished third with 18 gold, 26 silver, and 26 bronze.

In the girls’ category, Umoja Sharks led with 42 medals (20 gold, 13 silver, 9 bronze), followed by Braeburn Swimming Club (8 gold, 9 silver, 7 bronze) and Orca Swim Club (8 gold, 5 silver, 6 bronze).

In the boys’ division, Orca Swim Club topped with 57 medals (27 gold, 23 silver, 7 bronze), ahead of Aga Khan Academy (12 gold, 11 silver, 13 bronze) and Umoja Sharks (12 gold, 10 silver, 5 bronze).

Among the standout performers, Stephanie Wambui, 13, from Orca Club, won gold in the 100m freestyle in 1:17.45.

 “I credit my coach for the good preparation. This played a huge part in my performance today,” she said.

Maxwell Kamau, 10, from Woodcreek School, claimed the boys’ 100m freestyle title in 1:43.82, saying he trained hard knowing the competition would be tough.

Swimmers like Makena Waweru from Jawabu School and Ezra Muhia from Beapro Swimming Club praised the event for offering a platform to grow and dream big. Muhia shared hopes of one day representing Kenya at the World Aquatics Championships.

Coach Adrian Akath from Kigwa Ridge said this was their first gala experience. Paul Bokot, a parent, emphasised the importance of such events in nurturing young athletes’ potential.

Douglas Okatso, Secretary General of Kiambu Aquatics, called on the Kiambu County government to offer more support for aquatic sports.

The event served as a qualifier for the Kenya Aquatics National Age Group Championship, set for May 31, 2025, at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

The next Kiambu Aquatics event, the Sprints and Relays Gala, is scheduled for May 24–25 at Regis Academy, Runda.
