What you need to know:

  • Sammy Mulama of Golf Park, who led after the opening round with a blistering five-under-par 68 that featured seven birdies, faltered in subsequent rounds of 79 and 74 to finish seventh on two-over-par 221.
  • The KAGC series will pause this coming weekend and resume with the Goldfields Trophy in Kakamega from June 27 to 29.

On-form amateur golfer John Lejirmah extended his lead in the 2025 Kenya Amateur Golf Championship (KAGC) series after a hard-fought victory at the Ruiru Open, successfully defending his title at the par-73 Ruiru Sports Club course on Sunday.

Lejirmah, who now leads the KAGC standings with 1,555 points, held off a spirited final-day challenge from Ebill Omollo of Vet Lab Sports Club to clinch his second consecutive Ruiru Open crown.

The Royal Nairobi Golf Club player carded a final round of three-under-par 70, bringing his tournament total to nine-under-par 210.

The win came just two days after a playoff loss to senior pro Dismas Indiza at the Sunshine Development Tour – East Africa Swing second leg at the same venue

“It’s been a tough run, first losing to a playoff in the Sunshine Development Tour and now today Omollo giving me a run for my money, but I am really thankful for this win which means everything. But that’s golf—sometimes it tests you, and it’s not how hard you fall, but how focused you stay,” said Lejirmah.

Omollo, a long hitter, staged an early threat with four birdies on the front nine and three consecutive birdies to start the back nine.

However, bogeys on the 13th and 18th holes cost him dearly as he closed with a five-under-par 68, settling for second place at six-under-par 213.

Lejirmah, meanwhile, overcame a bogey at the 7th hole after making eight pars on the front nine. He stormed through the back nine with an eagle at the par-five 10th, birdies at the 14th and 18th—marking the third consecutive round he birdied the final hole.

Series defending champion, Michael Karanga, who started the final day just one shot behind Lejirmah at five-under, endured a nightmare front nine, carding two double bogeys and two single bogeys.

Despite two birdies at the turn and a strong back nine that included an eagle and two birdies, a bogey at 17 and a missed birdie on 18 saw him settle for a one-over-par 74 and third place on four-under-par 215.

Karanga remains second in the KAGC standings with 1,063 points, ahead of Elvis Muigua (766 points) and Omollo (409 points).

Naomi Wafula of Vipingo Ridge impressed with a two-under-par 71, tying for fourth place with Isaac Makokha of Kenya Railway Golf Club.

Sammy Mulama of Golf Park, who led after the opening round with a blistering five-under-par 68 that featured seven birdies, faltered in subsequent rounds of 79 and 74 to finish seventh on two-over-par 221.

The KAGC series will pause this coming weekend and resume with the Goldfields Trophy in Kakamega from June 27 to 29.
