Former Kenya international striker and club great Boniface Ambani is the new chairman of AFC Leopards.

Ambani polled 1,101 votes against his sole opponent, Enos Vincent Mutokah, who got 682 votes, to win the seat during the club's much-awaited elections in Nairobi on Sunday.

In his victory speech, Ambani said the new office will hit the road running with the aim of restoring the club's past glory.

"It's exiting to come back to head a club I helped to win their last league title in 1998. It's now our duty to work and the work starts immediately," Ambani said.

Redeem club's lost glory

Isaac Mulanda Mulindi was elected the new secretary-general after garnering 656 votes ahead of Robert Khamala Situma (534 votes) and Irene Wekesa (529).

Newton Lime Luchacha polled 676 votes to clinch the treasurer seat, with Edward Buhasho (599) and  Patrick Kanyangi (445) coming second third respectively.

Ambani, who played for AFC Leopards, Rivatex, Tusker, Tanzanian giants Young African (Yanga) and for professional clubs in India and Oman, has promised to redeem Ingwe’s lost glory.

He also promised to run the club professionally,  and to make it financially stable and competitive in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League.

He singled out player recruitment and youth development as the key areas he will focus on.

Call for Ingwe unity

As a player, Ambani won the Kenyan league title with AFC Leopards in 1998. Since then, the club has never won the title.

The elections were presided over by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.

Speaking during the exercise, Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi, who is a member of the club, called for unity among the newly elected officials.

Meanwhile, outgoing chairman Dan Shikanda urged all stakeholders to come on board and support the club.
