IG Kanja: There's no evidence Juja MP Koimburi was abducted, law to take course if he's lying
The mystery surrounding the abduction of Juja MP George Koimburi deepened on Tuesday as questions emerged in both police and family accounts of events before, during, and after commission of the crime.
Mr Koimburi, a fierce critic of President William Ruto and an ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, was roughed up and hustled into a Subaru vehicle at Full Gospel Church in Mugutha, Kiambu County, before being driven away by unidentified individuals on Sunday.
The lawmaker was cornered just 48 hours after he escaped police arrest for alleged land fraud on Friday only to be found dumped and left for dead in a coffee plantation in Juja.
“On Friday, May 23, 2025, the MP, fully aware of an impending arrest, evaded police by escaping on a motorcycle accompanied by his private security. His official vehicle, which was only occupied by the driver, was intercepted and the driver recorded a statement,” Inspector-General of Police Douglas Kanja said on Tuesday.
However, three days later, Mr Kanja, who issued a preliminary report on investigations into the abduction, said detectives were yet to make headway in identifying the owner of the Subaru used in the abduction, and Mr Koimburi’s kidnappers.
“The car is part of our ongoing investigations, and we will update the nation as more details emerge,” he said.
Mr Koimburi’s family and leaders allied to Mr Gachagua insist that police were behind the abduction and torture of the MP, a claim Mr Kanja appeared to dismiss on Tuesday.
Preliminary findings of police investigation, the police chief said, do not support the abduction theory as claimed lack of cooperation from the MP’s family in the probe.
