The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has assured all registered voters of the security of their registration details despite a temporary shutdown of the voter verification portal due to scheduled maintenance.

“We wish to assure all Kenyans that the registration details of the 22,120,458 registered voters, as recorded during the 2022 General Election, remain intact and secure,” the commission said in a statement released on July 6, 2025.

The announcement came as the IEBC conducts scheduled system maintenance on its voter verification portal, described as part of an ongoing transition to upgraded digital infrastructure. “The essential maintenance is part of an ongoing migration to new infrastructure aimed at enhancing service delivery through improved system performance and security,” the commission explained.

Earlier in the day, Kenyans took to social media to express concerns about their inability to access the portalwith some fearing their voter data may have been lost or tampered with.

In response, the IEBC stressed that the maintenance was pre-planned and necessary for the long-term reliability of voter services. “The commission highly regrets any inconvenience this may cause,” it said, “and appreciates your understanding as it works towards serving you better.”

The commission also assured the public that it would communicate once the system is fully operational and ready for voter detail verification.

The announcement comes as the future of the newly nominated IEBC leadership remains uncertain with a court ruling expected on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, to determine whether President Ruto’s appointments meet constitutional requirements.

The nominees include Erastus Ethoon (proposed chairperson), Hassan Noor Hassan, Mary Karen Sorobit, Ann Nderitu, Moses Mukhwana, Francis Odhiambo and Fahima Arafat Abdalla.

Questions have been raised about the transparency of the selection process particularly regarding ethnic and regional representation, gender balance and the independence of the nominees.
