What you need to know:

  • Gem MP aElisha Odhiambo ccused Mr Gachagua of using his social media team to sling mud at Interior PS Raymond Omollo.
  • Makadara MP George Aladwa, aske enforcement agencies to ensure peaceful protests are not hijacked by violent elements.

A group of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) lawmakers have demanded that action be taken against former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of making statements that threaten national security.

Addressing the media in Nairobi, Gem MP Elisha Odhiambo and the other lawmakers urged security agencies to investigate Mr Gachagua’s criticism of state institutions, particularly the National Intelligence Service (NIS) and its Director-General Noordin Haji.

“Why does Gachagua have such venom for the NIS? Every time he speaks, he attacks Mr Haji. These institutions safeguard our country and protect national stability,” Mr Odhiambo said.

Verbal attacks from politicians

The Gem MP also accused Mr Gachagua of using his social media team to sling mud at Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo.

Makadara MP George Aladwa, who is also the ODM Nairobi Branch Chairman, said Dr Omollo is being targeted for his commitment to national unity, “something that lacked in the previous administration”.

He added that public officials, especially in the NIS and the Ministry of Interior, lack a platform to defend themselves against verbal attacks from politicians and urged the government to protect them.

Mr Aladwa told law enforcement agencies to ensure peaceful protests are not hijacked by violent elements.

Destroying businesses or property

“The government should ensure demonstrators exercise their rights without destroying businesses or property. Goons exploiting the protests to create chaos must be arrested and prosecuted,” he said.

According to Luanda MP Dick Maungu, attacks on national security agencies undermine public trust in them and threaten national peace.

Mr Odhiambo announced plans to file a court petition within a week seeking accountability from former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i over the River Yala deaths.
