Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji was Monday arrested by detectives and locked up at Kibii Police Station in Juja for alleged incitement to violence.
The lawmaker was picked up in the afternoon as Saba Saba protests rocked various parts of the country, including Mr Mukunji’s Embu home county. He was booked at Kibii Police Station vide Occurrence Book No 06/07/07/2025.
According to the MP’s lawyer, Ndegwa Njiru, he was apprehended by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) attached to Juja Police Station and whisked off to Kibii Police Station.
Later, the MP was transferred to an undisclosed location as his supporters demanded his unconditional release.
Mr Njiru said when he visited Kibii Police Station, he was told that the MP had been released.
“The OB at Kibii Police Station has only recorded his entry to the station but it has not indicated his exit from the station,” Mr Njiru said.
“The OCS has confirmed that he only booked him for the exclusive purpose of holding him,” the lawyer said, adding that the MP's vehicle is still at the police station.
The lawyer, who was accompanied by Mr Mukunji's wife, also said a senior police officer at the station informed him that the MP was likely to face charges of incitement to violence.
However, he said the police withheld useful information about the MP's whereabouts.
Mr Njiru asked the DCI to produce and take the MP to court if they have any evidence for criminal offence.
At the same time, a cross-section of Embu residents has accused the DCI of intimidating Mr Mukunji.
“Mukunji was not involved in Saba Saba protests and we are demanding that he be released,” one residents said.
