CS Murkomen speeds up plan to rein in extremist religious groups

Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen.
The report of the presidential task force on review of laws governing religious organisations in Kenya will be tabled for discussion in the Cabinet next week, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has said.
Mr Murkomen explained that a Cabinet committee has already adopted the report of the task force chaired by Rev Mutava Musyimi, which recommended reforms to curb religious extremism.
The CS stated that the full Cabinet will consider the report before it's transmitted to Parliament for drafting and legislation of the necessary laws.
“The Cabinet committee has considered a raft of recommendations by the Mutava Musyimi-led taskforce proposing a legal framework for regulation of churches,” stated the CS.
Mr Murkomen was reacting to the Migori incident in which 57 people were rescued from a church. He lauded the swift action by security officers.
“Those practising extremist activities will be apprehended as they pose a danger to their congregants,” he said.
Mr Murkomen acknowledged the role religious institutions play, but faulted a few that take advantage of vulnerable faithful.
