What you need to know:

  • Turbo Sub-County Police Commander Patrick Wekesa said the incident occurred at Kokwet Pub.
  • The officer had left his work station armed with an AK-47 rifle, which he used to kill the two victims.

A police officer shot dead a woman in Eldoret on Thursday night before turning the gun on another man, in a suspected love triangle.

The officer, from Tembelio Police Station in Ainabkoi Sub-county, shot the woman — a bar attendant — three times, killing her on the spot. Then he shot a reveller, killing him instantly during the 10pm incident.

Turbo Sub-County Police Commander Patrick Wekesa said the incident occurred at Kokwet Pub in the Jua Kali area of Turbo Sub-county. The pub is reportedly owned by the woman.

Mr Wekesa said the officer had left his work station armed with an AK-47 rifle, which he used to kill the two victims.

"The suspect confronted his girlfriend on suspicion of infidelity before shooting the man as he attempted to intervene," said Mr Wekesa.

The incident drew the attention of officers from Jua Kali Police Station, who mobilized their colleagues from Turbo Police Station. The officers moved in swiftly and disarmed the suspect and arresting him.

"The suspect has been detained at Eldoret Central Police Station and is awaiting arraignment on Monday," said Mr Wekesa.

The bodies were moved to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) mortuary in Eldoret, awaiting post-mortem.
