A protester was shot dead and another was seriously injured during a confrontation between police and protesters at Tumaini Market, around 10 kilometres from Ol Kalou town.

Mr Sammy Kamau, the Nyandarua Central sub-County police boss, told Daily Nation that a police officer was also injured when protesters engaged police in running battles.

Mr Kamau said that the protesters had moved to Tumaini Market after being prevented from entering Ol Kalou town.

'We managed to take charge of Ol Kalou town, where there was recently massive destruction of public property. The protesters then moved to Tumaini Market, where they blocked the road. They attacked police officers who were clearing the road," he said.

At JM Memorial Hospital, Medical Superintendent Beatrice Mugure confirmed that a victim had been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.

'We have received one victim who is currently under special care in our ICU. I don't have sufficient details as the patient is still undergoing emergency treatment and examination," said Dr Mugure.

The injured police officer is receiving treatment at the same hospital.

A nurse at the hospital told the Nation that the officer is in a stable condition.
