Investigations into the fatal shooting of a civilian at London Estate in Nakuru on June 9, 2025, have revealed the identity of the police officer who pulled the trigger.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (Ipoa) has confirmed that Ephantus Njeru, 38, fired the shot that killed Daniel Nderitu during a botched drug raid.

Seven police officers, including Njeru, were arrested following protests that erupted after Nderitu’s death. The Nakuru County Police Commander subsequently announced that the National Police Service had interdicted 10 officers implicated in the shooting.
Of the ten officers, seven were arraigned in court on June 17, where Ipoa requested more time to complete investigations. The officers include Nicasio Njue, Eric Mwangi, John Kihara, Naftali Gitonga, Ephantus Njeru, Marceler Tanui and Isaac Anampiu.
The incident occurred during a confrontation between residents and officers who had gone to conduct arrests related to alleged drug peddling in the area. One officer was reportedly injured during the altercation and is currently recuperating in hospital.

Mr Njeru was presented before Justice Julius Nangea, but Ipoa requested time to subject him to a mental assessment to determine his fitness to stand trial. The court directed that he be escorted to the hospital on Wednesday for the examination.
In the meantime, Mr Njeru will be detained at Menengai Police Station in Rongai.
The six other officers were released after investigations failed to link them directly to the murder.
The case will be mentioned on July 26, when the suspect is expected to take a plea on the murder charge.
