The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2025 has placed Mount Kenya University (MKU) among the top five universities in the country. This is further confirmation that the institution’s consistent pursuit of excellence is hitting new heights of success.
The results of the survey were announced on June 18, 2025.
“MKU remains steadfast in its mission to be a centre of excellence in education, research, and community service,” says the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Deogratius JAGANYI.
He adds: “This recognition affirms our commitment to contributing meaningfully to global sustainable development and empowering communities through knowledge.
MKU has in the recent past won recognition from different quarters, cementing its place as an impactful institution in the education sector. But this is the first time the university has appeared on the Times Higher Education global list.
The respected British magazine evaluated 2,526 universities worldwide from 130 countries and territories. MKU impressed the assessors on parameters such as promoting good health and well-being, offering quality education, reducing inequalities and forging global partnerships.
Overall, the survey reviewed the universities’ progress towards achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Impact Rankings recognise institutions making meaningful contributions to sustainable development, environmental responsibility, and social impact on a global scale.
MKU is the United Nation’s Academic Impact (UNAI) hub chair for SDG-9, which focuses on Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure.
Prof JAGANYI says the ranking reflects MKU’s commitment to holistic development for its students and the wider community.
The high ranking came a few weeks after MKU had laid the foundation for its digital transformation, targeting enhanced service delivery.
On May 9, 2025, MKU rolled out its new ICT system embedded with Artificial Intelligence (AI), a major catalyst in its digital transformation agenda.
“This system will touch every corner of academic life. It is a custom-built digital environment, designed to enhance student experience, boost research, and enable agile learning. It is a system that listens, learns, and adapts to the needs of our customers, partners and industry,” said Prof JAGANYI.
Lecturers can now unlock new possibilities in research, collaboration and mentoring.
Students will be delighted that the system gives them tools with which to take charge of their education. That includes a mobile app that enables them to track their academic progress and engage with lecturers. The system will enable students to track applications while giving them real-time personalised responses through automation of all processes from admission to graduation, reducing administrative burdens.
As MKU continues to grow, the new system ensures digital infrastructure can scale efficiently while supporting innovation, remote learning, and future integrations – a seed for modern, agile university.
Prof JAGANYI says installation of the advanced ICT system is strategically aligned with MKU’s broader vision of digital transformation, institutional excellence, and student-centred service delivery.
