Boost the CBE senior school teaching plan
It is gratifying to note that the government has set aside Sh980 million to adequately train senior schoolteachers for the Competency-Based Education (CBE). This underscores its commitment to the transition to the new system to enable learners to benefit from instruction.
The students who excel can go up the academic ladder, while others can be accommodated in skills training that will make them useful members of society, contributing to their well-being and their families, community, and national development.
The money the government has made available amid its tough economic challenges is meant for the retooling of teachers for the CBE. This is pretty crucial as junior secondary school has suffered disorganisation.
The section was left in the primary schools for good reasons, including access and continuity for the young ones, but the general finding has been that little education has been going on. One of the key problems was, of course, the lack of properly trained teachers. The first cohort will struggle to advance in senior secondary school.
However, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has assured parents and other stakeholders of the provision of the required resources for a smooth transition of the Grade 9 learners to senior school next January. He has promised to assist schools in establishing the pathway-based infrastructure.
Three pathways have been adopted in senior schools, namely science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), social sciences and arts, and sports. He has lauded the school principals for their willingness to work with the Ministry of Education to make this possible.
The training of teachers for the CBE has been rather haphazard and inadequate. With the adequate resources provided, the new plan is good and should enable the realisation of education goals.
There is a need to remain focused and committed to building an education system that imparts the knowledge and skills to youth to enable the nurturing of the human resources required for national development and prosperity.
