State must rethink Haiti peace mission

Kenyan police forces patrol a neighbourhood, a day before the arrival of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken who will visit the Caribbean country as Washington seeks to solidify the UN-backed security mission, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti September 4, 2024.
Rethink mission • President William Ruto should once again pay a visit to the Kenyan police officers in Haiti and assess the situation, says Tonny Kyule. “Assisting our fellow black people in Haiti is not a bad thing. However, this should have been handled by a multinational force from Africa and not by Kenya alone. The Haiti peace mission is dangerous. Let’s rethink it.” His contact is [email protected].

Parliament rot • A video of two female MPs fighting within the precincts of Parliament in Nairobi “was as embarrassing, as it was childish”, remarks W. Kimariech. “Other lawmakers are now vilifying them and want to sanction the one who filmed the fight for exposing them. There’s a lot of rot within Parliament that is yet to be exposed. Shame on them!” His contact is [email protected].

Gen Z vote • The Gen Z, who staged last year’s anti-tax protests, are poised to play a key role in future, says Jediel Muthuri. “The government should give them national identity cards in order to register as voters, as this is not negotiable. We (the older generation) must not think we will just decide the outcome of the 2027 elections, these young people certainly will.” His contact is [email protected].

Wasted rains • Have any farmers received the promised heavily subsidised fertiliser? asks Dr Teresiah Wambui Gathenya. “I’m from Kiambaa sub-county in Kiambu County. Although the rainy season is almost gone, we’re still waiting. Was the subsidy withdrawn? If so, farmers should have been given ample notice to make other arrangements.” Her contact is [email protected].

Tariffs madness • The trade war manifested by the tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump continues to rattle every country, says university don XN Iraki. “Their unpredictability makes matters worse. Trump has now removed the high tariffs on electronics from China. Does that mean he has blinked? What is Kenya’s strategy in this? We can’t be bystanders.” His contact is [email protected].
Have a predictable day, won’t you!
