Ruto Sh20m donation violates ban on harambees

President Ruto donates Sh20m to city church

Ruto offering • By donating Sh20 million and 20 acres of land to a Nairobi church, President William Ruto has violated his own ban on harambees by public servants, says Jimmy Thumbi. “The huge amount of money could have gone a long way in alleviating the suffering of poor families. He could also have given them the land to share or paid their children’s fees.” His contact is [email protected].

Protect power firm • Kenya Power needs protection from governors, says Eliakim Limo, citing its standoff with the Nairobi City County over unpaid electricity bills. “The governors want the firm prevented from disconnecting electricity over unpaid bills. This is unacceptable. This is a publicly listed company, whose mission is to provide a service and generate revenue for shareholders.” His contact is [email protected].

Boyhood feuds • The dispute between Kanjo (the Nairobi City County government) and Kenya Power, university don XN Iraki says, has just reminded him of his boyhood fights. “One would spit on the back of the hand and dare another boy to remove it (tharia njata). If he did, a fight would ensue. Is it possible that the key leaders in both are re-enacting this boyhood behaviour?” His contact is [email protected].

Bad road • A section of Nairobi’s Milimani Road between Sagret and Heron hotels often gets badly eroded whenever rain falls, says Churchill Amatha. “And every time this happens, hard-core is used to fill in the potholes. Is it so hard to just dig it up and instal a culvert to solve the problem once and for all? It’s expensive having to redo it every rainy season.” His email address is [email protected].

Weather and education • A Unicef report, Alnashir D. Walji notes, has confirmed that children are being deprived of education as a result of weather changes, including the heat waves claiming many lives. “The Gaza war and the Ukraine-Russia conflict have denied children education. Schools and early childhood development centres have been bombed, leaving deep scars in learners.” His contact is [email protected].
