Culture • Teachers taking their students on bench-marking tours of schools that excel in national examinations are just wasting time, says F. Mukembu. “It’s not easy to borrow the culture and routine of another school.” Each school, he explains, should instead strive to build its own unique culture and tradition to improve its performance in academics and extracurricular activities. Projects • Whenever leaders are elected, says F. Mukembu, they promise to start new projects, some of which are completed but others remain white elephants. “There is no need to only start new projects. The existing ones should be upgraded and revamped to be of help to the community. Our leaders should give this a try and they will see the difference.” His contact is [email protected].

Climate • As US President Donald Trump has declared he doesn’t believe in climate change, James Gakuo is a bit curious about former Vice-President Al Gore’s impending visit to Kenya. He’s reportedly coming next month for a leadership training programme, part of a global effort to promote climate change action. “It must be about money,” James declares. Fallen standards • Double-M matatus serving Nairobi’s Eastlands, Leonard Omongo recalls, were once a joy to ride in. “Ample leg room, friendly crews and well-maintained minibuses were the hallmarks of the purple fleet. Today, the buses have diesel fumes wafting into the cabin and rusty floor boards, torn and dirty seats. Who will restore Double-M?” His contact us [email protected].

Gender • A strong lobby such as the old Maendeleo ya Wanawake and Fida is needed to campaign for women to get top public appointments such as IEBC chair and University of Nairobi Vice-Chancellor, says Miriam Manya. “Strong, well-educated, articulate and experienced women are being shunted aside, making the proverbial glass ceiling to remain elusive.” Her contact is [email protected]. Have an empowering day, won’t you!
